Google Analytics 4 (GA4) uses an event-based model for tracking user interactions, which allows for a more flexible and comprehensive analysis of user behavior. Events in GA4 provide detailed insights into how users interact with your website or app.
1. Automatically Collected Events
Automatically collected events are those that GA4 tracks without requiring any additional configuration. These events are set up by default when you implement the GA4 tracking code on your site or app.
Examples:
- Page_view: Triggered when a user views a page.
- First_visit: Triggered when a user visits your site for the first time.
- Session_start: Triggered when a new session starts.
- User_engagement: Triggered periodically as users interact with your site.
2. Enhanced Measurement Events
Enhanced measurement events are also automatically collected but can be customized through the GA4 interface. These events provide deeper insights into user interactions with minimal setup required.
Examples:
- Scroll: Triggered when a user scrolls to 90% of the page height.
- Outbound_click: Triggered when a user clicks a link that leads to an external website.
- Site_search: Triggered when a user performs a search on your site.
- Video_start, Video_progress, Video_complete: Triggered at different points during video playback.
3. Recommended Events
Recommended events are not automatically tracked. Implementing these events requires adding custom code to your site via Google Tag Manager or using an app. Here are the most important events to track in GA4:
